Plan a focused local Google Ads campaign
Plan a local Google Ads campaign around one service, a genuine service area, a useful landing page and measurable enquiries before you spend.
A small campaign is easier to understand when it has one clear job. Use this planning sequence before choosing keywords or writing an advert.
1. Choose the offer and the area
Start with a service you can deliver consistently. Write down the towns or areas you actually serve, the customer question you answer and the page people should see after clicking. A campaign for several unrelated services makes it harder to tell which part works.
For example, a local plumber could begin with boiler servicing in the areas the team can reach, then send visitors to a page about that service, availability and how to enquire. This is an illustrative plan, not a recommended budget or targeting setting.
2. Check location settings and define a useful enquiry
Review the location option as well as the places selected. Google Ads distinguishes people in or regularly in a location from people showing interest in it. For a business that only serves local customers, check whether your current option matches that need. Location targeting uses signals and is not perfectly accurate, so review where enquiries actually come from. See Google’s advanced location options.
A click is not a lead. Choose the action you can record, such as a relevant call or form enquiry, and decide how you will check whether it came from the service and area you offer. Note the customer’s request without collecting more personal information than you need.
Before launch, check that the page works on a phone, has a clear contact route and matches the advert. Set a budget you can monitor, and check the campaign’s location settings and conversion goal in your own account. Google’s Search campaign setup guide explains the current setup steps; its location targeting guide explains the controls.
3. Set a launch checklist and first review
- Does the advert describe the service on the landing page?
- Can a mobile visitor call or submit the form successfully?
- Have you checked the intended conversion action with a test and confirmed how it is recorded?
- Who will review spend, search terms and lead quality after launch?
Record the start date, service, area, landing page, goal and spend limit. In the first review, compare search terms, costs and relevant enquiries. A term that produces clicks without the right enquiries may need attention, but avoid changing everything at once. Keep a dated note of each change and what happened afterward.
Quick check: Can a customer tell what you offer, where, and how to contact you? Can you tell whether the enquiry was relevant? If either answer is unclear, fix that before increasing spend.
